Phenoxyethanol Blends

Synergistic Preservative Systems for Broad-Spectrum Microbial Protection in Personal Care and Industrial Formulations

Phenoxyethanol Blends are ready-to-use preservative systems that combine 2-Phenoxyethanol (CAS 122-99-6) with carefully selected co-preservatives and antimicrobial boosters. Phenoxyethanol, a glycol ether provides strong activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. By blending it with ingredients such as ethylhexylglycerin, caprylyl glycol, or organic acids, these systems extend antimicrobial coverage to include yeast and mould — delivering true broad-spectrum preservation. These blends are paraben-free, formaldehyde-free, and designed for easy incorporation into both leave-on and rinse-off formulations.

Key Benefits of Our Phenoxyethanol Blends

01

True Broad-Spectrum Protection

While phenoxyethanol alone is primarily bacteriostatic, our blends pair it with boosters that enhance activity against yeast and mould — delivering balanced, broad-spectrum coverage across all microbial classes.
02

Lower Effective Use Levels

Synergistic co-preservatives such as ethylhexylglycerin work by disrupting the interfacial tension at microbial cell membranes, improving phenoxyethanol's penetration. This allows effective preservation at total use levels as low as 0.5–1.0%.
03

Wide pH Tolerance

Our blends are effective across a broad pH range (typically pH 3–8.5, depending on the specific system), making them suitable for both acidic and near-neutral formulations without loss of efficacy.
04

Thermal Stability

Phenoxyethanol is stable up to 85°C, allowing our blends to be added during or after the emulsification stage without degradation of the active preservative system.
05

Clean-Label Compliance

All blends are free from parabens, formaldehyde donors, isothiazolinones, and halogenated compounds — meeting the requirements of clean beauty formulations and major global regulatory frameworks.
06

Ready-to-Use Liquid Systems

Pre-blended in optimized ratios and supplied as clear liquids, these systems simplify production by eliminating the need for in-house weighing, dissolving, or balancing of individual preservative components.

Why Choose Our Phenoxyethanol Blends?

FAQs of Phenoxyethanol Blends

Phenoxyethanol (2-phenoxyethanol, CAS 122-99-6) is the primary antimicrobial agent in all our blends. It is a glycol ether with broad activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by disrupting the cell membrane of microorganisms. In blends, it is combined with boosters or co-preservatives that extend its activity to cover yeast and mould as well.
Phenoxyethanol on its own is primarily bacteriostatic and has limited activity against yeast and mould at typical use levels. Boosters like ethylhexylglycerin reduce the interfacial tension at microbial cell membranes, improving phenoxyethanol's penetration and overall kill rate. Organic acids like sorbic acid or benzoic acid add complementary antifungal activity. Blends achieve broader protection at lower total preservative concentrations.
Under EU Regulation EC 1223/2009 (Annex V), phenoxyethanol is permitted at a maximum concentration of 1.0% in finished cosmetic products. This limit applies to both leave-on and rinse-off products. In our 90:10 blend (phenoxyethanol + ethylhexylglycerin), a use level of 1.0% delivers 0.9% phenoxyethanol, which falls within the regulatory limit. Always verify limits for your specific market.
Most of our blends can be added during or after the emulsification stage, at temperatures at or below 60°C (140°F). Phenoxyethanol is thermally stable up to 85°C, but some co-preservatives (e.g., sorbic acid) may be sensitive to prolonged heat exposure. We recommend adding preservative blends in the cool-down phase for best results.
Several of our blends use ingredients that are accepted under natural cosmetic standards such as COSMOS, NATRUE, and ECOCERT — including benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and their salts. Glyceryl caprylate-based blends are also popular in natural formulations due to their multifunctional classification. Contact our team to confirm compliance with your specific certification body.
